On the Border - Bensalem, PA
RATING: 3.5 / 5
Your patience will be rewarded when dining at this restaurant. It literally took an hour to figure out what I could eat, but the manager and staff were very accommodating. We read over each label until we found enough ingredients to make tacos. I was able to eat one kind of rice, one kind of chicken, one kind of taco shell, etc. It was exhausting, though I wouldn't mind eating there again in the future since I'd know exactly what to order. When the food arrived, I was starving and everything smelled delicious. I neatly assembled my tacos and immediately began devouring the tasty meal. The meat was juicy and tender; the rice was herbal and aromatic; when you added all the ingredients together it was pretty amazing. Also, they do have an allergy menu, though it's not as useful to those with multiple food allergies.
Tony Moran's - New Orleans, LA
RATING: 4 / 5
I love this restaurant! I eat there every time I visit New Orleans! The chefs are always willing to cook me something I can eat and it's always exceptionally delicious!! The atmosphere is very relaxed, especially if you visit off-season. There's also a full-stocked bar attached to the restaurant. The price is reasonable, though some of the drinks can be a bit pricey. I can't wait to go back! :-)
Houlihanns - Lawrenceville, NJ
RATING: 4 / 5
This restaurant seems to take allergies seriously; the waiter was very vigilant when taking my order and reading my card. They cooked my meal from scratch, though I had to send the dish back once because they topped it with noodles and were not confident of the ingredients. As long as you’re very specific about your food allergies, and carry a chef card to help convey what you cannot have, this restaurant is a very good place to eat. Not only does is seem relatively safe, but the food is pretty good too. I was even able to order/customize more than one item off the menu!!!
Carlyle - Arlington, VA
RATING: 3 / 5
This place is pretty good; though I could eat very few things on the menu. I had a hard time finding a meal they could cook from scratch and ended up ordering seared ahi with sweet potato fries; the meal was good but I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there. I used to love this restaurant, back when they offered roasted chicken as a meal option; unfortunately they changed the menu
P.F. Chang’s - Princeton, NJ
RATING: 0 / 5
I attempted to dine at this restaurant to no avail. When I sat down and presented my allergy card, the waiter informed me that all of their meat is dipped in egg- which I am allergic to. My family and I ended up leaving and dining elsewhere. Upon further investigation, we were informed they may not actually do this, though I can’t say for sure. It’s possible they may have told me that to avoid the liability. Either way, they are not an allergy friendly restaurant- even though they claim to be.
Ooka - Willow Grove, PA
RATING: 4 / 5
I love Ooka!! There are only a couple things I can eat on the menu and they’re kind of expensive, but their food is so good! I usually order chicken yakitori and a whole lot of sushi and sake, but if you’re allergic to fish, it may not be the best place to go.
Tako Sushi - Bensalem, PA
RATING: 1 / 5
I explained my allergies thoroughly and ordered soup. I ended up getting sick because they put soy in the broth; afterwards they wouldn’t take it off the bill and I was feeling too ill to fight with them. Way to kick a woman when she’s down. I gave them one star because I could just order sushi, but I won’t go back since I don’t enjoy paying for other people’s mistakes.
Big Fish - Princeton, NJ
RATING: 2 / 5
This restaurant was alright; they managed to serve me seared ahi with a side of sweet potato fries; free of all my allergens. The food wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t bad.
Texas Roadhouse
RATING: 0 / 5
I did not even get a chance to set foot in this restaurant; there is a sign on the door warning potential customers that the restaurant may be filled with peanut dust. I really appreciate the warning, but why even use peanuts? Couldn’t they come up with an alternative to this particular deadly food allergen?
Maggianos Little Italy- King of Prussia Mall, PA:
RATING: 5 / 5
I LOVE this restaurant! The chefs always treat my (multiple) allergies as a challenge instead of a burden. Every time I eat there, the chefs come to the table to ask what I would like to eat. They make the dish from scratch and it's always delicious. Yum!
Red Robin- Oxford Valley and Bensalem, PA:
RATING: 3.5 / 5
Red Robin is decent with food allergies. I give them my allergy card when I eat there, to make things easier. They always cook my food on tinfoil (by request) and even offer to change the French fry oil. As long as I'm explicit when ordering, I do just fine. I wasn't able to obtain ingredients on the bread, so it seems they don't have ingredients for everything. I also was only able to order a few things off the menu, most of which were kind of bland. They do however offer an allergy dining menu, but if you have multiple food allergies, it's hard to navigate. All in all, they are at least trying to cater to people with food allergies, so I would recommend checking it out.
Johnny Rockets- Philly, PA:
RATING: 0 / 5
I haven't eaten at this restaurant in a while, but when I did, I almost died from an allergic reaction. I asked if the chicken I ordered was marinated, they said no. I ate it, and sure enough, it was. My throat started closing, my face swelled, and the waitress looked terrified. She must have called 911 because an ambulance arrived and tried to give me more benadryl when they should have used an Epi-Pen. I would stay far away from this place to be safe; like I said it's been a while but for all I know nothing has changed over there
Unos- Franklin Mills, PA:
RATING: 3 / 5
This restaurant is decent but I always seem to have cross-contamination issues. It's probably because they cook my cheese free pizza (which does contain wheat) in the same oven and probably on the same wooden plank as the cheese pizza. The food is pretty good when it doesn't make me sick, but it usually does. If you eat here have your food cooked on tin foil-even if it's pizza and make sure the chef uses clean utensils. On the plus side, they do have a small touch-screen computer with ingredients for everything on the menu and the employees are always very accommodating. It's a start, but I think they still need to train their kitchen staff on preparing allergy-safe food.
Bonsai Japanese Steakhouse and Hibachi- Hamilton, NJ:
RATING: 1 / 5
I ordered soup and sushi at this restaurant and explained my allergies thoroughly. I’ve eaten there before without a problem, but not this time. When I received my large bowl of soup, I began to eat; it looked safe enough. After a couple bites, I uncovered a cooked egg (which I’m severely allergic to) hiding among the noodles. I panicked, thinking I was going to perish any minute. Luckily, I ended up not having an allergic reaction, but obviously it could have ended badly. The egg must have been dropped in the hot soup just before they brought it out; it had not broken open, thankfully. I would not recommend dining at this restaurant if you have any kind of food allergy (unless you speak fluent Japanese); the language barrier is far too dangerous. I gave them one star since I am able to dine there and order sushi
