fish_imgFISH - The Facts
1) Finned fish and shellfish allergies are common among children and adults; the allergy is usually life-long.
2) The protein within the flesh of fish is what usually causes an allergic reaction.
3) Gelatin and fish oil may also cause a reaction in fish allergic individuals.
4) More than half of those with a fish allergy are also allergic to other kinds of fish. It's always best to check with your doctor if you are unsure what is safe to eat.
5) Many people with a fish allergy are able to eat canned tuna and salmon since the meat is not fresh.
6) Finned fish and shellfish are not closely related; if you are allergic to one, you may not be allergic to both.
7) The Federal Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) require the specific type of fish to be listed on the label of any food product containing soy ingredients.
8) Fish is sometimes used to as an ingredient in soups, packaged broth, sauces, and marinades

Tips and Tricks for Battling Fish Allergies:

1) An allergic reaction can be caused by three different methods: direct contact, cross-contamination, or inhalation of fish particles. Direct contact could be caused by ingesting fish after forgetting to read a label or ingredient list. Cross-contamination happens when your food is cooked on the same surface as food containing fish. The risk of both happening is significantly higher at Chinese, Japanese, African, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Thai restaurants, or anywhere else a predominance of fish are served. Inhalation may be common in close proximity to foods such as cooked fish, fish sauces, hot fish broth, anchovy pizza, or anywhere fish products are being cooked. Allergic reactions have also been reported at fish markets.
